Calpurnia 'Greyhound' by Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux
When Jeremy Schaulin-Rioux co-directed the video for PUP's Guilt Trip, he really started something.
He concocted an origin story for the Canadian punk band starring young actors Finn Wolfhard and Malcolm Craig. Wolfhard went on to become one of the stars of Stranger Things; now Schaulin-Rioux's directed the video for Wolfhard and Craig's own real band, indie-rock outfit Calpurnia, which they started after appearing in the Guilt Trip video.
This is a one-take video shot on Super 16mm that features each member of the fourpiece band, starting with Wolfhard, walking through the city at dusk. And each one has a shadow that is playing the instruments that they play in the band.
Despite a small window of time and very limited number of takes, Schaulin-Rioux and DP Cole Graham have pulled off this tricky one-shot idea with aplomb. It's a peach, and as he says below, making the video wih his Guilt Trip stars was a proud moment for Schaulin-Rioux.
"I worked with Finn Wolfhard and Malcolm Craig for the first time many years ago when they played the younger version of PUP for the Guilt Trip music video. As we reunited the gang to do the sequel (Sleep In The Heat), I found out that after that first project they'd actually started their own band.
"Being in the crowd to see the fully formed Calpurnia (with Finn, Malcolm, Ayla and now Jack!) smashing out their own music to sellout crowds, and especially getting to work with them on this music video has been a surreal full circle and one of the most proud times I've ever had in filmmaking."
