Luke Bather - 31st July 2017

Sing J. Lee explores what it means to belong in this fast-paced, lush-looking video for Tchami.

Using non-actors and shooting almost entirely in Shanghai, Sing draws from his own experiences as a British-born Chinese man to create a deeply personal study of a girl from rural China being swept away by the city. Opulent, towering architecture and the colourful lights of a metropolis at night dazzle, overwhelm and ultimately take their toll on our protagonist, resulting in a visually poetic, serene final scene in which she revisits her roots with a new outlook.

“The story came from tangents of several personal projects I have been developing about cultural duality as a British-born Chinese man. I wanted to explore a duality in a more intimate setting, in the same country, as opposed to two different cultures and countries.”
