Mark Lanegan 'Emperor' by Joshua Lipworth
Joshua Lipworth takes Mark Lanegan's Emperor as his cue for an atmospheric tale of an Eastern European dictator nearing his demise - loosely based on the fall of the Romanian communist leader Ceaucescu.
As the dictator imagines his loyal generals (and his young daughter) by his side, but in reality his mind is warped, and escape doomed to fail. Shot in 16mm on location in Estonia - in the suburbs of Tallin and the deserted underwater Soviet prison camp of Rummu - this is atmospheric, gritty character study of extreme delusion and the corrupting effect of power.
