Mentrix 'Walk' by Gilles Esteve
Gilles Esteve's breathtaking video for Berlin-based Iranian electronic artist Samar Rad, aka Mentrix, marks the first international music video filmed in Iran in over four decades.
Exploring themes of womanhood, unity, solidarity and spirituality, the narrative contrasts the concrete and neon aesthetic of urban Tehran, to the breathtaking and symbolic horizons of the Iranian deserts. Packed full of colour, striking fashion and gorgeous landscapes, this is a side of Iran that many might not be aware of. In that respect it is an important visual that pays homage to a rich culture.
DoP Quentin De Lamarzelle focuses on ambitious camera movement and no-nonsense composition, whilst editor Axelle Zecevic balances the snappy, quickfire visuals with moments of complete tranquility.
GILLES ESTEVE:
"Filming the music video in Iran was a challenge executed by a team of believers, it connects Mentrix’s sound and universe to the landscape of her motherland.
"The production was the artistic encounter between a European - mostly French - team, and an Iranian team. The film follows this duality, mixing the western and the oriental, showing an Iranian women-only cast, representing the Iran of today, coming across western aesthetics (fashion, image, etc)."
