Ensemble Apex 'Shostakovich Made Me Hardcore' by Gabriel Gasparinatos
Gabriel Gasparinatos directs a blend of performance and art in the video for the Sydney-based youth orchestra Ensemble Apex.
The film Shostakovich Made Me Hardcore is a preview to a new digital season that Ensemble Apex will launch in August – a response to the Covid-19-related cancellations of their 2020 run of shows. Led by artistic director and conductor Sam Weller, the group brings young people into the fold of classical music, breaking down cost and cultural barriers to give audiences access to high-quality, edgy orchestral performances.
Director Gabriel Gasparinatos says: "In the video, we wanted to create an orchestral performance, art tour and architectural exploration in one go – and spin it with streetwear, club lighting and a contemporary classical score. It takes influence from a variety of inspirations – young and old."
Utilising frenetic club lights contrasted with traditional architectural lighting, the aesthetic is built on dichotomy and the push and pull of clashing themes and concepts - and brilliantly weaves a tapestry of unfamiliar imagery and tradition together with flair.
