Prospa 'Want Need Love' by Thomas Ralph
In Thomas Ralph's video for Prospa, the young protagonist embarks on a remarkable journey - after his death.
For the UK dance-electronic act's increasingly euphoric Want Need Love, Ralph confronts some well-worn nostrums about the Afterlife, and then gives them a proper rave-style makeover. This out-of-body experience bears all the hallmarks of a seriously psychedelic experience.
This is partly due to Ralph collaborating with macro photographers Chris Parks and Roman Hill on sequences that echo sequences from 2001: A Space Odyssey to Altered States, and beyond. As a result this road traffic accident victim passes experiences extraordinary beauty as he transitions to his new post-Life reality.
[Death is] of course sad and scary. But it could also be beautiful and psychedelic.
"We wanted to explore the greatest ‘trip’ of all: Death. The process on Earth, the after and the experience for the deceased.
"Like many people this year it’s been on [my] mind. It’s unknown. Personal. And, of course sad and scary. But it could also be beautiful and psychedelic.
"We wanted to portray those almost cliché narratives we humans have written; the white light, the ascension, the afterlife - but pushed into a beautiful visual that reflects Prospa’s aesthetic and the euphoria of their music.
"The whole concept wouldn’t have been conceived without the stunning inspiration and collaboration of macro artists Chris Parks and Roman Hill. Their brilliance made our lo-fi sets in the back of the Caviar office look cosmic."
